Is grout waterproof? Can I make it waterproof?

Epoxy grout is waterproof. Acrylic grout is water-resistant. Cement-based grout absorbs water, and you need to use a grout sealer to make it waterproof. Epoxy grout is the best choice when it comes to tile waterproofing, it’s very durable and stain resistant.

Cement vs acrylic vs Epoxy grout

There are three main types of grout: cement-based, acrylic, and epoxy.

Cement-based grout is porous, and can easily stain if not sealed. It’s the least water-resistant, absorbs water easily and tends to crack over time. Despite these disadvantages, many people prefer it because it’s easy to apply.

Acrylic grout is really easy to apply. It usually comes in a premixed container. It takes 24 hours to dry and 72 hours to cure. Manufacturers recommend using a grout sealer for the best results. Acrylic grout tends to shrink and crack over time.

Epoxy grout requires a lot of effort to apply but offers better water resistance properties. You need to apply it quickly as it hardens within 20-30 minutes. Epoxy grout typically takes 48 hours to cure.

Can you make grout waterproof?

To make grout waterproof, you need to use grout sealer. The sealer blocks water from getting into the grout and under the tiles. Apply grout sealer only to grout that is completely dry.

Additionally, you can also place a waterproof membrane behind your shower tiles to catch any water droplets that might seep through the grout. This is an excellent way to protect your bathroom walls and floor from water damage.

How to apply grout sealer properly

The most convenient way to apply grout sealer is to use a roller applicator. Fill the applicator with the sealer. Invert the bottle, allow the sealer to coat the wheel and roll it over the grout. Make sure the sealer soaks in and penetrates the grout. Work the applicator wheel back and forth to ensure uniform coverage.

You can apply two coats of grout sealer to make sure everything’s sealed properly. Wait for two hours before applying the second coat of sealer.

You can use a cloth to remove excess sealer.

Is grout sealer always necessary in a shower?

Grout sealer is always necessary in a shower to prevent moisture and water from penetrating the material. Washing and showering produces a lot of water vapour in the bathroom. Water vapour can penetrate grout and damage the structures behind the tile if you don’t use a sealer.

If you’re using cement-based grout in the shower, you should re-seal it every six months to prevent stains and mold.

Can you use a shower without sealing the grout?

You should not use a shower without sealing the grout first. If you don’t seal the grout, moisture will get soaked and eventually form mold.

How long until I can shower after grouting?

Allow 24 to 72 hours for grout or grout sealer to fully cure. If you take a shower before the material is properly cured, moisture may penetrate it causing the buildup of mold.

Can shower water leak through grout?

Shower water can leak through grout if the material is not properly applied or sealed. Grout is typically porous and absorbs water if you don’t use a grout sealer.

What type of grout is waterproof?

Epoxy grout is the only waterproof grout available on the market. Acrylic grout is water-resistant, and cement-based grout is porous. Waterproof grout contains polymer, that’s what makes it waterproof. It’s also stain-resistant and easier to clean.

What happens if water gets through grout?

If water gets through grout, it remains stuck behind the tile and grout. Mold and mildew will start forming in the area. After a few days, dark spots of mold will become visible.

Is Epoxy grout required in commercial kitchens?

Epoxy grout is required in commercial kitchens because it offers greater bond strength and better chemical resistance than other types of grout. Tough conditions in commercial kitchens require using high-quality grout that provides a surface resistant to oleic acids which can be easily cleaned.

Grout sealer is recommended in commercial kitchens to prevent contamination. Bacteria love moist environments. The sealer prevents the absorption of moisture and forming of mold.

However, sealer makes epoxy grout yellow. You may want to keep this detail in mind if you decide to seal epoxy grout. Epoxy grout doesn’t necessarily require sealing.
